Keep your house clean as a pet owner

Australia is a nation of pet lovers with one of the highest pet ownership rates in the world

in fact, almost 70% of Australian households have a pet!

Living with pets comes with a lot of joy, but can also make your attempt to keep your house clean a real challenge.

In this blog, we would like to share some simple tips to keep both you and your furry friends happy and healthy!

1) Vacuum frequently

Pets give us so much: unconditional love, companionship, entertainment – and hair.

So. Much. Hair.

If you live with four-legged friends, the right vac can be essential to keep the fur from flying.  Although many vacuums are capable of the task, having a vacuum that’s specifically designed to clean up pet hair can be helpful. Vacuums for pet hair often have special features—like an anti-tangle brush head and HEPA filter that help target and remove pet hair, debris and dander from your home, improving the air quality. For smaller areas, the lint roller removes stray pet hair.

2) Clean accidents immediately

Accident can happen, but if not immediately cleaned up, pet urine and faeces can stain and smell.

Vinegar is a good natural cleaning solution for pet odours and stains. Mix equal parts vinegar and water and spray or blot on the affected area. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before scrubbing and rinsing. Thorough cleaning immediately after accidents helps remove stains and odours right away before they have a chance to set in.

 3) Wash bedding weekly

If your pets spend a lot of time on beds and soft furniture, these can collect hair and dirt. We recommend washing all bedding at least once a week to keep it fresh and free of allergens, and use washable covers on sofas and chairs. Regularly washing all the bedding our furry friends use, is a simple way to keep a cleaner and healthier place for both pets and humans.

4) Remove the dust

Pets love brushing themselves up against furniture, but doing so they can leave behind allergens. Regular dusting is an effective way to control this issue and can make a big difference in reducing allergy symptoms for pet owners, young children or people with asthma or hay fever.

5) Clean pet bowls and other belongings

Wash pet bedding, toys, and other accessories that can bring bad odours. Pet food bowls can attract bugs and rodents, and therefore they should be cleaned regularly. You can try our Dishmatic fillable handle : the sponge can be replaced so you can keep this separate from the one you use for your dishes or surfaces and avoid cross contamination. Don’t forget to clean litter boxes frequently and keep dog waste picked up in the yard or garden.

Dog crates and plastic beds can also be cleaned with Dishmatic products – a great way to keep your pets happy and healthy .

6) Regular grooming

It can sound obvious but grooming your pet regularly can drastically reduce unpleasant smells. This includes frequent baths and brushing. A pet brush belongs on your house cleaning supply list. Regular brushing helps keep pet hair manageable and significantly reduces the amount of hair found around your home. For dogs with dense undercoats, consider a de-shedding tool.

7) Use pet safe cleaning products

Be careful when using cleaning supplies that include toxic chemicals, which can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Thankfully, nowadays there are a lot of naturally derived, nontoxic and biodegradable cleaning alternatives on the market, which will ensure a clean home without being a risk for your pets and family members. You can also use baking soda, which is a natural cleaner and stain remover and is known for its deodorising power. Sprinkle baking soda on pillows, rugs, drapes, and other fabrics, then vacuum to remove pet odours. Next up on our cleaning supplies checklist is distilled white vinegar, an excellent disinfectant, cleaner, deodoriser, and carpet stain remover. Use a vinegar and water solution to wipe down pet beds weekly, and add it to your washing machine to clean pet blankets and toys.
