Valentine’s Day is everywhere! Flowers in the supermarkets, expensive chocolates and soppy cards. But amongst the focus on the love with have for our friends and partners, there’s one relationship that often gets overlooked: the one you have with your home.

There’s a quiet heartbreak that happens when your home no longer feels like a sanctuary. Instead of calm and comfort, you feel overwhelmed. With the chaos of life our home can sometimes drift into neglect, clutter builds, dust settles and resentment quietly creeps in until the place you were once in love with feels more like a burden than a sanctuary.

The month of love is the perfect time to try and reconnect with your home. Not with roses or cheesy cards, but through cleaning and decluttering. Here at Dishmatic we’ve come up with some handy little tricks and tips.

Clean What You See First👀

You don’t need to deep clean the entire house in one day, that often makes people feel overwhelmed and stops them even starting.

Begin with what you see and use daily:

  • Kitchen counters
  • The dining table
  • Your bathroom surfaces
  • The floor in your bedroom
  •

Cleaning visible areas first creates that instant relief and calm. That quick win should hopefully help you build momentum.

Declutter One Category, Not One Room🏡

Instead of moving from room to room, try decluttering a category first e.g., mugs, clothes, books etc.

This approach helps you see how much you own, making it easier to decide what deserves space in your home. Ask yourself:

  • Do I use this?
  • Do I love this?
  • Would I buy this again today?

If the answer is no, it might be time to let it go.

Leave Room💌

A decluttered home isn’t empty, it’s intentional. Leave space on shelves.

These clear areas allow our favourite decoration room to shine instead of getting lost with everything else.

Make it a Relationship, Not a Project❤️

Falling back in love with your home isn’t a one time reset, it’s an ongoing relationship. Life gets busy and of course mess will happen, and that is ok!

What helps is building habits that gently bring you back to love your home, you can find our good cleaning habits for 2026 in our recent blog here

  • A 10-minute nightly reset
  • A declutter basket
  • A monthly ‘what do we no longer use’ check in

These small practices keep resentment from building and help you keep the love for your home.
